MG 5R-2 alloys provide a number of distinct advantages in the nodulization of ductile iron. These include higher quality castings through improved graphite nodularity for a given magnesium addition, a reduction in the amount of alloy needed for effective nodulizing, fewer as-cast carbides in thin section castings, higher levels of ferrite and thus lower hardness for a given composition and section size, and greater tolerance to higher levels of carbide and pearlite promoting residual elements.
MG 5R-2 alloys provide exceptionallly high nodulizing efficiency. MG 5R-2 alloys are characterized by a higher overall content of low cerium rare earths, and provide the optimum proportions of rare earths and magnesium in a single addition. The choice of Rare Earth levels gives foundries flexibility in determining which Rare Earths content best fits their individual needs.
Rare Earths assist in the nodulizing task, serving to enhance Magnesium recoveries. Many foundries have found that nodulizer reductions in the 10-20% range are possible when using Magnesium-Ferrosilicon alloys in higher Rare Earths levels.
